 Chavis Moving and Storage Company was founded 1972 in Port Royal, SC by Royce Chavis a member of the respected Chavis moving family of South Carolina. Founder Royce Chavis served as president of the South Carolina Movers Association and was awarded the association's first Lifetime Achievement award upon his retirement in 2007.
A new office/warehouse was built in the Burton area of Beaufort in 1994.
In August 2002 Lloyd H. Griffin, III a veteran business owner from Rome, Georgia, bought Chavis Moving from the Chavis family and moved to Beaufort. Lloyd was a United Van Lines agent (Bagby Transfer Company, Rome, Georgia) from 1978 until 1992. During the years between Lloyd's sale of Bagby Transfer Company and purchase of Chavis Moving and Storage he owned a beverage distributing company in Rome, and served as organizing chairman of a community bank there.
Lloyd and his wife Donna, between them, have six children and seven grandchildren. Donna
commutes to Northwest Georgia where she continues her twenty plus year career in medical
risk management. Lloyd is a graduate of Auburn University (War Eagle!), a thirty year
Rotarian, having served as a past president of the Rome, Georgia club, and an active
Episcopalian.
